प्राचीन काल में एक बहुत ही अत्याचारी राक्षसराज था- हिरण्यकश्यप, जिसने तपस्या करके ब्रह्मा से वरदान पा लिया कि संसार का कोई भी जीव, देवी-देवता, राक्षस या मनुष्य उसे नहीं मार सकते. न ही वह रात में मरेगा, न दिन में, न पृथ्वी पर, न आकाश में, न घर में, न बाहर और यहां तक कि कोई शस्त्र भी उसे नहीं मार पाएगा. ऐसा वरदान पाकर वह और भी ज़्यादा अत्याचारी व निरंकुश हो गया था. लेकिन इसी हिरण्यकश्यप के यहां प्रह्लाद जैसा पवित्र आत्मा व ईश्‍वर में अटूट विश्‍वास करनेवाला पुत्र पैदा हुआ. प्रह्लाद भगवान विष्णु का परम भक्त था. हिरण्यकश्यप को यह बिल्कुल पसंद नहीं था कि उसका पुत्र किसी और को पूजे. उसने प्रह्लाद को आदेश दिया कि वह उसके अतिरिक्त किसी अन्य की स्तुति न करे. प्रह्लाद के न मानने पर हिरण्यकश्यप उसे जान से मारने पर उतारू हो गया और उसने प्रह्लाद को मारने के कई प्रयास किए, लेकिन वो हर बार प्रभु-कृपा से बचता रहा. ऐसे में हिरण्यकश्यप की बहन होलिका ने एक सुझाव दिया, होलिका को अग्नि से बचने का वरदान था. यानी उसे एक ऐसा आवरण मिला था, जिससे आग उसे जला नहीं सकती थी. हिरण्यकश्यप ने अपनी बहन होलिका की सहायता से प्रह्लाद को आग में जलाकर मारने की योजना बनाई. होलिका बालक प्रह्लाद को गोद में लेकर अग्नि में बैठ गई. लेकिन भगवान की कृपा से होलिका का वह आवरण भक्त प्रह्लाद को मिल गया और उसको कुछ नहीं हुआ. वहीं होलिका जलकर भस्म हो गई. इसके बाद हिरण्यकश्यप को मारने के लिए भगवान विष्णु नरसिंह अवतार में खंभे से निकल कर गोधूली बेला यानी सुबह व शाम के समय का संधिकाल, में दरवाज़े की चौखट पर बैठकर हिरण्यकश्यप को अपने नुकीले नाख़ूनों से उसका पेट फाड़कर उसे मार डालते हैं. नरसिंह न मनुष्य थे, न जानवर, न वो सुबह का समय था, न शाम का, हिरण्यकश्यप को मारते समय न वो अंदर थे, न बाहर और उनके नाख़ून न अस्त्र थे, न शस्त्र. उसी समय से होली का त्योहार मनाया जाने लगा यानी एक तरह से यह अच्छाई की बुराई पर जीत का संदेश है. व्यक्ति चाहे कितना ही बलशाली क्यों न हो, यदि वो अत्याचार की सीमाएं पार कर जाता है, तो कितने भी वरदान हों, उसे बचा नहीं सकते. बुराई का अंत निश्‍चित है. इसी तरह हमें भी बुरी शक्तियां ही नहीं, अपने मन में पनप रही सारी नकारात्मक भावनाओं को भी होली की अग्नि में दहन कर देना चाहिए और नेकी के मार्ग पर आगे चलना चाहिए.

On not accepting Prahlad, Hiranyakasip got up on his life and he made many attempts to kill Prahlada, but he always escaped with mercy. In such a case, the sister of Hiranyakashipu gave a suggestion, Holika was a boon to avoid fire. That is, he had found a cover which could not burn him. Hiranyakaship planned to kill Prahlad by fire in the fire with the help of his sister Holika. Holika took the child Prahlad in the fire and took it in the fire. But by the grace of God, the cover of the Holika was found in the devotee Prahlad and nothing happened to him. At the same time the Holika was consumed by burning water. After this, to kill Hiranyakshyap, Lord Vishnu Narasimha, leaving the pillar in Avatar, sitting on the door of the door in the twilight of the twilight bela ie morning and evening, kills Hiranyakaship by sticking his stomach with his fangs nails and kills him. Narasimha was neither man, nor animal, nor was it morning time, nor even in the evening, while killing Hiranyakashipu, they were neither inside nor outside and their nails were neither weapons nor arms. Since then, the festival of Holi was celebrated, that is, in a way, it is a message of victory over the evil of goodness. No matter how strong the person is, if he crosses the limits of tyranny, then there are so many boons, no one can save him. The end of evil is sure. In the same way, not only evil forces but all the negative emotions growing in our mind should be burnt in the fire of Holi and should walk on the path of virtue.
